A Claims Assistant assists in the processing of veterans’ benefits claims for compensation and / or pension cases.
Examples of duties include:

Maintains claims folders, ensuring that all pertinent records and documents are preserved appropriately;

  • Analyzes claims and determines if disposition of claim and control action has been appropriately identified;
    Establishes or updates control actions to monitor status of claims;
  • Develops straight forward evidence and assists higher-level team members in gathering more complex evidence;
  • Facilitates the work flow between the team and other teams in the Veterans Service Center;
  • Generate various types of correspondence including letters, reports of contacts, reports, and responses to beneficiaries and outside stakeholders or agencies; 
  • Reviews, dates stamps and controls all incoming correspondences and claims files to determine jurisdiction and next action. Requests transfer-in of folder if necessary or refers claim to proper Regional Office of jurisdiction.

The PSC works within a team environment and serves as (1) a counselor or advocate for VA claimants providing information about a broad range of benefits and assisting with applications for VA benefits and services, (2) a legal technician gathering requisite evidence from medical, military, community, and other sources to support benefit determinations, (3) a decision maker weighing the evidence and applying the controlling laws and regulations, and (4) a computer systems user who inputs appropriate data to generate accurate benefits payments, controls pending issues or schedules future actions, and releases complete, correct notifications of benefits determinations. The PSC must not only be competent in interpretation and application of law and procedures, but must be well versed in medical principles and terminology and in public relations skills. The PSC can expect to work in all areas of the Veterans Service Center.
